The team behind the Group 1 winner Zazou unleashed another exciting prospect of similar name and by the same stallion on Sunday when Zazera ran out the easy winner of Germany’s first juvenile race of the season at Baden-Baden.

Mark Johnston, successful trainer and breeder

Trained by Waldemar Hickst, who took over the training of Zazou from Mario Hofer, Zazera runs in the colours of W H Sport International and coasted home over the six furlongs of the Badener Jungend-Preis to leave the nearest pursuer among her 12 rivals trailing by four-and-a-half lengths.

A daughter of Shamardal, Zazera was bred in France by her sire’s former trainer, Mark Johnston, who sold her as a yearling through Haras du Logis at the Arqana August Sale for €60,000. Zazera’s three-year-old full-sister, Shame On You, is in training with Charles Hills and has been placed twice in three starts, while their half-brother Duke Of Homberg, by Dynaformer, was a Listed winner in the US in 2009.

Mark Johnston bought the dam, the dual-winning Woodman mare Woodlass, at Tattersalls’ February Sale in 2008 for 95,000gns. At the time she was carrying a filly foal by Dansili, who was subsequently named Makheelah and trained by Clive Brittain, for whom she was placed twice.
