Frankel on the Al Bahathri gallop in Newmarket

On the first day of the British Classic trials, there was good news for racing fans with the announcement that last year’s sensational 2,000 Guineas winner Frankel is ready to resume training after a slight setback through injury.

The four-year-old unbeaten son of Galileo is believed to have knocked a foreleg in training and suffered some swelling in the tendon area. Despite an initial scan last week showing no damage to the tendon, a precautionary follow-up investigation was made on Wednesday, with Sir Henry Cecil’s vet giving Frankel the all-clear.

Frankel, the winner of five Group 1 races, including the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes, may yet make his seasonal debut in the Lockinge Stakes on May 19.
