Laughing, the winner of four consecutive graded stakes races in 2013 prior to her final appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in November, died during colic surgery on Monday.

Bred in Ireland by Floors Farming and the Duke Of Devonshire, the daughter of Dansili was a half-sister to the Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca. A 275,000-guinea yearling, she was initially trained in Ireland by Charles O’Brien before being sold privately to race for Richard Santulli from Alan Goldberg’s stable.

A Listed winner in her native country, Laughing thrived in the US, winning the Grade 1 Diana Stakes and Grade 1 Flower Bowl Invitational last season, along with three other graded stakes contests for a prize-money tally equivalent to just over £700,000.

Laughing was one of six individual Group/Grade 1 winners for Juddmonte sire Dansili during 2013.
