Despite the relocation of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale to Newmarket owing to Covid-19 restrictions, a son of Teofilo set a new record for the auction when selling to Mick Kinane on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club for £325,000 on Monday.
The colt, who was bred by Jim Bolger and sold by his granddaughter Clare Manning of Boherguy Stud, is a full brother to the Group 3-winning duo Guaranteed and Gear Up, who was last seen winning the Acomb Stakes at York last month.
It was a phenomenal result for Manning, who is only in her second year of consigning yearlings said: “He has been a superstar since he has been here. He has the pedigree and the physique, he was busy and had a number of vettings, but it was difficult in this climate to gauge what he would fetch.
“He came to prep eight weeks ago and has always been straightforward, he is one of those that just have got something about them. I have had a brief chat with grandad, and he is absolutely delighted.”
Kinane added: “He is a lovely horse, and we didn’t think we’d be pushed that hard. He was a stand-out, he could have been sold here in a few weeks at the October Sale. Hopefully, he can run like his brother, he was a good horse.”
Beechvale’s pinhook pays dividends
Beechvale Stud came into the sale knowing they had one of the key lots on offer thanks to Champers Elysees, winner of the Group 1 Matron Stakes, providing a timely update for their colt by leading first-season sire Mehmas.
Purchased for just €19,000 during last year’s Goffs November Foal Sale by siblings Tara and Chris Armstrong of Beechvale Stud, the pair were rewarded on Monday when the colt was sold to Joe Foley for £190,000.

Tara Armstrong said: “He was a very athletic foal and we had to really like him to spend €19,000 on him. We were hopeful Champers Elysees would progress at three and thought Mehmas would have a big chance of becoming champion first-season sire too.
“My dad has looked after the colt since last year, so it is all down to him.”
Cox strikes for Snazzy Jazzy’s brother
Having masterminded the career of Snazzy Jazzy, it was no surprise to see that trainer Clive Cox went to £75,000 to secure the full brother to his Group 3 winner during the early stages of Monday’s auction.
This year’s edition of the auction is being held in Newmarket due to the ongoing restrictions around coronavirus in Ireland.
It was at the 2016 edition of the auction that Cox purchased Snazzy Jazzy from his breeders Bluegate Stud before training him to win six races including the Group 3 Prix de Seine-et–Oise and the Listed Cathedral Stakes.
Cox said: “We’re delighted to get Snazzy Jazzy’s brother who won the sale race and was a prolific earner for us. I loved him when I saw the horse, he is really athletic, and sadly there are not many Red Jazzes around.
“I am delighted to secure him, especially for Middleham Park Racing as he is our first horse for them. I’m really thrilled to have an opportunity to train a horse like this for them.

“They were both athletic horses and knowing his brother it makes a lot of sense. He’s a nice horse and a full brother to a 110-rated horse from a proper black-type family. The mare it still quite young as well.”
By Red Jazz, like Snazzy Jazzy, the colt is out of the Bryon mare Bulrushes who boasts an impressive record at stud having produced five winners from five runners including the aforementioned Snazzy Jazzy, Ross Castle, Ten Year Ticket, Admiral Rous and Dancewithastranger.
Further back it is the family of Group 2 Lennox Stakes winner Tariq and Wi Dud, who took the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes and was second in the Middle Park Stakes.
Middleham Park Racing added another yearling to their repertoire when bloodstock agents Peter and Ross Doyle went to £60,000 for Baroda Stud’s son of Excelebration, whom they had purchased for €20,000 as a foal.
Tim Palin, Director of Middleham Park Racing, said: “The mare has got a 111-rated runner by Lord Shanakill [Time Shanakill] and Excelebration has proved he can get top horses, Barney is by the sire.
“This is a lovely sort and probably goes to Mark Johnston. We were probably running on fumes bidding-wise.”
Walsh reinvests
Former amateur jockey Katie Walsh, who has had success in the breeze-up sector in recent years having sold the likes of last year’s French Classic third East and multiple Group 2 scorer Caspar Netscher, was among those busy securing new stock ahead of next year.
Under her Greenhills Farm banner, Walsh signed the docket at £70,000 for a Kingman filly offered by the Castlebridge Consignment who is a sister to the Group 3-placed Masen while her third dam is none other than blue hen Hasili.
Walsh said: “She has been bought to breeze. She has a pedigree to die for and she will always hold her value as a broodmare.
“Hopefully her full brother [Masen] will go on next year as a three-year-old and do some more. He got very hot in the stalls last time and then ran too free, but I know they are mad for him at Ger Lyons’s.”
De Burgh on the mark for Newmarket’s newest trainer
Harry Eustace revealed last week that he is set to take over the training licence at Park Lodge Stables in Newmarket from his father James early in the new year having spent four and a half years as assistant trainer to William Haggas.
During Monday’s session bloodstock agent Hubie de Burgh was responsible for sourcing a £68,000 daughter of Australia for Eustace and he said: “She is for a new client, new to the industry, and he particularly wanted to send a horse into training with Harry Eustace.
“She is by a good young stallion, who is a proven producer of Group performers. She comes from a good family, and if she becomes a stakes performer she will be worth many multiples more.”
Offered by Manister House Stud, the filly is the first foal out of the unraced Holy Roman Emperor Dillydallydo who is from the family of top-class performers Sholokhov, Soldier Of Fortune and Skitter Scatter.
Final figures
By the close of Monday’s session 172 lots from a total of 206 offered had sold for £4,023,500, down 13 per cent on 2019’s session, the average rose one per cent to £23,395 and the median fell three per cent to £18,500. There was a healthy 83 per cent clearance rate during the session.
