One of the most admirable British-bred horses of recent years, Soldier Hollow, continues to consolidate the good start which he has made to his stud career in Germany.

The son of In The Wings was bred by Car Colston Hall Stud, who sold him to German International Bloodstock for 75,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2001.

This proved to be money extremely well spent because, trained in Germany by Peter Schiergen, Soldier Hollow went on to win four Group 1 races, enjoying a particularly good year as a seven-year-old in 2007, when he landed his second victory in Munich’s Group One Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen, which he had also landed two years previously.

Soldier Hollow retired to stud the following spring and it is now very pleasing that he has come up with the German Derby winner this year in his first crop. Pastorius, a son of the Monsun mare Princess Li, won the Deutsches Derby in Hamburg at the start of July and now, four weeks later, has proved that that victory was no fluke by following in his father’s footsteps with victory in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen.

This victory completed a good day as grandsire for the deceased Sadler’s Wells stallion In The Wings: the former Kildangan Stud stalwart ranks as maternal grandsire of the Sheikh Hamdan-owned Mazameer, the two-year-old son of Green Desert who had landed the Prix de Cabourg at Deauville earlier that afternoon.
