Sandown Park and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association have come together to host the first ever Breeders’ Day at the racecourse on Wednesday, September 15.

Breeders’ Day will fall during National Racehorse Week and will provide racegoers with insight into the breeding industry by engaging them with competitions, interactive displays, a QR code trail and a retired racehorse parade.

There will also be interviews with breeders, give-aways and trade stands as well as opportunities to learn about shared ownership and how to get involved in thoroughbred breeding.

Each race on the card will be sponsored by an organisation from the bloodstock industry with additional prizes for the breeder of each winner.

The National Trainer’s Federation (NTF) will also support the day and will present its Lycetts Team and Championship Awards to nominated yards during the afternoon.

Peter Jensen, Chairman of Sandown Park, said: “This is an initiative suggested by Petra Gough, one of the team here, several years ago and so we are delighted to finally have the opportunity to make it happen.

“It is fantastic that the TBA have partnered with us and we hope that the day will really showcase the vital role that breeder play in our industry to a new audience.”

The TBA’s Chief Executive Claire Sheppard added: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the team at Sandown Park racecourse to deliver its first day dedicated to showcasing the thoroughbred breed and their breeders during National Racehorse Week.

“The event will provide many opportunities for race fans to learn more about the early years of a racehorse, including interactive displays, competitions, and our trade stand where members of the TBA team will be on hand to answer any questions and provide information on further learning opportunities and how to get involved.

“We are thankful to Sandown Park for approaching us with the idea and for all of their support for this day.”
