Salomina became the latest big-race winner for her late sire Lomitas and trainer Peter Schiergen on Sunday with victory in the Group 1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) at Dusseldorf.
Raced by her breeder Gestüt Bona, the filly not only hails from the same stable as Lomitas’s star daughter Danedream but is also bred along very similar lines. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and King George winner is out of the Danehill mare Danedrop while Salomina is the second foal of Saldentigerin, by Danehill’s son Tiger Hill. Both Saldentigerin and Tiger Hill were also trained by Schiergen.

A Group 3 and Listed winner, Saldentigerin hails from Tiger Hill’s first crop, conceived during his days at Gestüt Schlenderhan, where he started his stud career before standing for five seasons for Darley at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket and Kildangan Stud in Ireland. The three-time Group 1 winner returned to his native Germany, to Gestüt Fahrhof, for the 2011 season.
Lomitas was another stallion to spend his stud days switching between Germany and England. On retirement from a racing career which was noted as much for its intrigue as the horse’s talent, Lomitas retired to his owner Walther Jacobs’s Gestüt Fahrhof in 1995 before also being taken on by Darley at Dalham Hall Stud seven years later on the back of the success of such horses as Silvano, Belenus and Sumitas – all members of his first crop.
The son of Niniski returned to Germany for the 2007 season, with Saldentigerin visiting him that year to produce the Listed-placed colt Salut and returning with even greater success 12 months later for the mating which would result in Classic winner Salomina. Lomitas died at Gestüt Fahrhof in 2010.
