Frankel wins the Sussex Stakes by five lengths

It was the news all fans of the great Frankel wanted to hear: the son of Galileo will race on as a four-year-old next season.

His delighted owner/breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah confirmed after Frankel’s defeat of Canford Cliffs in the Sussex Stakes that he will stay in training “if Sir Henry Cecil would like to keep racing him”.

Frankel is now eight wins for eight runs – four of those at Group 1 level – and he looks likely to have just one more run this season. Despite initially naming the Juddmonte-sponsored International Stakes at York as a potential target, Cecil later stated that the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot – in which he may face Canford Cliffs once more – is his most likely final challenge of the year.

Timeform have given Frankel a rating of 142 following his Sussex Stakes victory, making the highest-rated horse in the world.
