Darley’s first-season sire Poet’s Voice struck with his very first runner at Pontefract on Monday with the three-length victory of Black Magic in the five-furlong maiden.
Bred in partnership by Corduff Stud and J Corcoran, Black Magic is a son of the Kendor mare Centifolia and was sold at the Goffs Orby Sale for €45,000. A half-brother to multiple winners Colourbearer, Dissent and Heronchelles, he is trained by Richard Fahey for Heather Steel.
Poet’s Voice, one of five sons of Dubawi at stud along with Makfi, Monterosso, Worthadd and Universal, becomes just the second of this year’s first-season sires to be represented by a winner after Handytalk won for Lilbourne Lad on debut at Windsor last Monday. Canford Cliffs and Zoffany, two of the early-season favourites in the betting market for the freshman title, have had two runners apiece to date.
The covering fee for Poet’s Voice remained at £12,000 for 2015 after 47 of his first-crop yearlings sold last year for an average price of 102,163gns.
