Tattersalls Ireland’s two-day September Yearling Sale concluded on Wednesday and posted an improved set of results on the previous year.
The median of €8,000 represented a 23% increase from 2010, while there were also 7% rises in both aggregate (to €4.6m) and average (€10,911). Most encouraging, however, was a clearance rate of 84% for the 505 yearlings offered, an indicator of the strength of trade across the board.
“It is obviously very satisfying to attain growth in the aggregate, average and median for the second consecutive year and the clearance rate has again been excellent,” said the company’s new General Manager Roger Casey.
“It was particularly pleasing to see the diverse range of UK and international buyers, no doubt encouraged by the successful year that our graduates have had on the racetrack. We have had an abundance of purchasers from the UK, France, Spain, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Qatar and Italy over the two days.”
Arakan’s promising son Trumpet Major
A Grove Stud-consigned son of first-season sire Duke Of Marmalade topped the sale at €70,000, sold to Willie Browne’s Mocklershill breeze-up operation. He is out of the multiple-winning Grade 2-placed Diesis mare Literacy and is a half-brother to two-year-old winner Jubilance.
Grove Stud also struck with an Acclamation colt out of Irish Oaks winner Vintage Tipple, who sold for €58,000 to Sackville Donald. The colt is to be trained by Tom Dascombe.
John O’Byrne signed for a colt by Rock Of Gibraltar out of a daughter of Al Bahathri, which headed proceedings on the final day of the sale when selling for €65,000. Consigned by Moortown House Stud, he is a half-brother to the dual Group 3 winner Almaty, while another half-sibling, Artisia, is the dam of recent Irish St Leger third Red Cadeaux.
Tattersalls Ireland’s September Yearling Sale has already produced 90 two-year-old winners winners from its 2010 graduates, headed by Champagne Stakes winner Trumpet Major, a €20,000 purchase who is entered for the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes on October 8.
