Sir Robert Ogden

Two leading buyers who had yet to show their hands at the European yearling sales played a dominant role in the first two days of trade at Goffs with Shadwell Estate Company and Sir Robert Ogden accounting for the Orby Sale’s top five lots.

Angus Gold was busy early on the second day of the sale, securing a first-crop daughter of New Approach for €350,000. The January-foaled filly is a half-sister to Future Generation.

Just three lots later he went to €340,000 for another filly, this time by Arch and a half-sister to the Group 1-winning two-year-old Kingsfort.

The top-priced colt of the sale is now in the possession of Sir Robert Ogden after he paid €300,000 for the Glenvale Stud-consigned son of Montjeu out of the Listed-placed Mayano Sophia on Tuesday.

Sir Robert was back among the bidders on Wednesday when paying the same amount for Staffordstwon Stud’s Galileo filly out of the winning Green Desert mare Altitude, who is grey like her great grand-dam Alruccaba.

The third of Shadwell’s high-priced trio was another filly, who was rightly much sought after, being by the late Marju and a half-sister to one of this season’s toughest performers, Banimpire.

Goffs’ Orby Sale, which, after two days saw an increase in aggregate (to €20,494,000) but slight decreases in both average (€61,544) and median (€42,000) from the 2010 figures, concludes today (Wednesday, September 29).
