Muhtathir, a dual Group 1 winner who developed into a leading sire, has died aged 25 due to the infirmities of old age.
A Shadwell homebred by Elmaamul out of the Al Nasr mare Majmu, Muhtathir was initially trained by John Gosden to win five races including the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.
Transferred to the care of Saeed bin Suroor ahead of his four-year-old campaign, Muhtathir took the Group 1 Premio Vittorio Di Capua before adding the Prix Jacques le Marois to his record at five.
It was at Charles-Henri de Moussac’s Haras du Mezeray in Normandy that Muthathir spent the majority of his stallion career from where he has produced Prix de l’Opera winner Satwa Queen and three-time Group/Grade 1 scorer Doctor Dino.
Recently, he has made an impact in the National Hunt sphere as the sire of Cheveley Park Stud’s exciting hurdler Envoi Allen and the Grade 1-winning hurdler Quel Destin.
Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster said: “Muhtathir was a hugely talented performer on the racecourse and transferred that ability and will to win to his stock.
“He produced several high-class Flat performers and in his later years became a highly sought-after sire of jumpers. He was still hugely popular this year, covering a limited book of 40 mares at €6,000.
“I must give a special mention to the team at Haras du Mezeray, who did a superb job managing the horse and giving him the platform to flourish in his second career.”
