Sir Eric Parker enjoyed a good week as breeder of Listed winner Havana Gold, whose victory at Haydock came just 24 hours after that of another Crimborne Stud graduate, Huff And Puff, at the same track.
Havana Gold would almost certainly be the holder of an unbeaten record were it not for his saddle slipping late on in the Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville when he looked to have the race at this mercy. Ryan Moore was the unfortunate jockey, whose fall caused him to miss out on a Group 1 winner later in the day when having to stand down from his ride on Excelebration in the Prix Jacques le Marois.

Moore had ridden Havana Gold to victory on his debut at Newmarket in June, when he was sent off the less favoured of the two Richard Hannon runners in the race. The Teofilo colt demonstrated that his early success was no fluke when following up in a novice stakes at Ascot before his unfortunate outing to Deauville.
Unfazed, he eventually claimed his black type win in the Ascendant Stakes over a mile at Haydock on Saturday, and now looks set to contest the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster next month.
An 80,000gns yearling purchase at Tattersalls last year, Havana Gold is out of the dual Group 3-winning Desert Style mare Jessica’s Dream. His three-parts sister (by Teofilo’s sire Galileo) is to be offered at Tattersalls October Book 1 as part of a four-strong draft from Crimborne Stud.
Huff And Puff, a five-year-old son of Azamour and the Listed-placed Coyote, landed his third victory on Friday in Haydock’s 1m6f handicap. He is a half-brother to Lingfield Oaks Trial runner-up Colima, as well as Group 3 winner Oh Goodness Me and the Grade 3-winning hurdler Eradicate. Coyote’s filly foal by Sea The Stars was sold by Crimborne last December for 160,000gns to the Tsui family’s Sunderland Holding Inc.
