Bangkok, a high-class and popular stalwart of the Andrew Balding stable, has been retired to stand at Chapel Stud as a dual-purpose sire for 2022. He will stand alongside Planteur on behalf of owner/breeder Simon Davies following a deal brokered by Billy Jackson-Stops of JS Bloodstock Consultancy. His stud fee and terms will be set at a later date.
Won or placed in eight stakes races with earnings of £630,000 for owner King Power Racing, Bangkok was last seen defeating Juan Elcano and Mohaafeth in Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes at York.
A consistently high-class and tough racehorse, the son of Australia also won the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown, a win that propelled him into the Derby reckoning, and twice scored in the Listed Winter Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield. He also ran second to Japan in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Overall, he won six of 24 starts.
“Bangkok has been a pleasure to train for the last four seasons,” said Andrew Balding. “His class has enabled him to achieve results at a variety of distances and his courage and constitution are second to none. He has the ability, looks and temperament to be a top-class performer at stud, and we will certainly be supporting him with mares.”
Bred by Barronstown Stud out of the Listed-placed Darshaan mare Tanagham, Bangkok is a half-brother to five stakes performers including Group 1 winner Matterhorn and the dam of Champion miler Ribchester. As a descendant of blue hen Fall Aspen, he also hails from the family of Group 1 winners Elnadim, Occupandiste, Mondialiste and Intello.
He was a 500,000gns yearling when sold to SackvilleDonald at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale.
